WALTER GIFFARD EFFIGY
WALTER GIFFARD EFFIGY

HOLY TRINITY CHURCH
WEARE GIFFARD, DEVON

The stone effigy, thought to date from about 1243, of Sir Walter Giffard was originally located side by side with that of his wife Lady Alice de St George on a tomb in the north transept of Holy Trinity in Weare Giffard, but they are now housed separately in arched niches after being removed in the 19th century to make room for a new organ. Sir Walter's effigy can be seen here in situ beside pews with 15th century carved decoration. There is a legend that his ghost walks at midnight seeking his wife from whom he has been separated in his last rest.
