WALTER GIFFARD EFFIGY

HOLY TRINITY CHURCH
WEARE GIFFARD, DEVON

Sir Walter Giffard was son of Gervaise Giffard (b.1122). Walter is recorded as active during the reign of Henry III (who reigned 1216-1272). He held the manor of Weare in the Torridge district of Devon and the manor subsequently took his name as its suffix. The ancient Giffard residence Weare Giffard Hall stands adjacent to Holy Trinity Church wherein this effigy, thought to date from about 1243, of Sir Walter can be seen, his head resting on a pillow supported by (now headless) angels and his feet resting on a small dog.
