PEPPERCOMBE BAY
PEPPERCOMBE BAY

Thomas Giffard (1506-1550), son of John Giffard and Joane Sydenham, is remembered for an accidental fall on his wedding day from a cliff at Peppercombe Bay, near Parkham in Devon, the spot being subsequently known as Giffard's Jump or Giffard's Leap. The exact place of the incident is not marked, neither does the tree which broke his fall remain, but this photograph illustrates the probable vicinity.

See Appendix 19 for the poem entitled Giffard’s Leap (1791) by Sir Ambrose Hardinge Giffard.
