Sir Richard Grenville (1542-1591) was captain of the Revenge at the Battle of Flores when he was mortally wounded in 1591. His father was Roger Grenville (1516-1545), who was captain of the Mary Rose when it sank in Portsmouth Harbour on 15 July 1545.
Sir Richard was nephew of Mary Grenville (d. 1608) and his father Roger Grenville was Mary's brother. Mary married John Giffard (1523-1585), from both of whom Mary Emma Sercombe (1859-1922) is directly descended.
