Born in 1788 in Dublin, Ireland, Stanley Lees Giffard was the son of John Giffard of Dromartin Castle (1745-1819) and Sarah Morton (d.1827), and was a barrister and founding editor of the London Standard newspaper. His second wife and cousin Mary Ann Giffard died in 1869 and is buried at Christ Church graveyard in Folkestone.
