HITHER GREEN CEMETERY, KENT (NOW GREATER LONDON)
Born in 1843, Horatio Sercombe was the youngest son of William Goode Sercombe (1801-1869) and Emma Giffard (1807-1853), and uncle of Mary Emma Sercombe (1859-1922). Horatio’s wife and three of their children also share the grave, and the plot is next to that of his cousin Henry Sercombe (1857-1916).
The headstone bears the following inscription:
My dear husband Horatio Walter Giffard Sercombe who was killed by a motor, November 24th 1915 aged 72 ~
Also of dear Bernard Giffard our youngest son who fell at Vimy Ridge, May 21st 1916 aged 24 ~
And dear Ellen Dora our younger daughter who passed away suddenly on October 14th 1917 aged 34 ~
“Thy will be done” ~
Also Ellen Mary who died March 2nd 1939 aged 89 ~
