An illustration of the uniforms worn by seamen in the 1850s, when Mary Emma Sercombe's (1859-1922) father, Henry Auton Giffard Sercombe (1838-c1861) began service as a merchant seaman in 1854 at the age of 16. He is described as a mariner until his presumed death in 1861.
