GREENWICH ROYAL NAVAL HOSPITAL
GREENWICH ROYAL NAVAL HOSPITAL

This is where John Sercombe (1794-1862) ended his days. In 1694, Mary II achieved the “darling object of her life” by founding the Royal Hospital for Seamen on the site of Greenwich Palace. It would be a charity for sailors from the Royal Navy who were too old, sick or badly wounded to continue service. Designed by Wren, it was described as “one of the most sublime sights English architecture affords”.
